The empty display

An empty display case in a museum? Why?

As part of the project, we asked people in our district about their thoughts on the topics of immigration, home and regional identity. Many were open to an anonymous interview, but avoided becoming part of the exhibition with their personal experiences — often out of fear of hostility and marginalisation in an aggressive, over-excited social climate. New majorities in politics have led to further uncertainty.

Quite a few promised participations were cancelled. Language barriers, unresolved residence status or frequent relocations were also obstacles for newcomers. Many important voices therefore went unheard. The empty display case symbolises the untold stories of immigration, missing family members, lost objects or traditions that are no longer lived.

At the same time, we invite you to share your personal story of immigration to our district or the experiences of your family with us. We have space! For your exhibits, photos and suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you. Please use the commemorative sheet on display.
